Q.  How do I register to submit via Grants.gov?

A.  Texas Tech University is already registered for the Grants.gov submission process.  Individual PI registration is NOT required.  However, some agencies may require you to register for their agency-specific website for electronic grant applications (i.e., NIH or NSF).

Q.  What agencies are requiring proposals to be submitted on Grants.gov?

A.  Most federal sponsors have already made the move to Grants.gov and require new submissions be sent using Grants.gov.  (i.e., , NIH, NOAA, Dept of Energy, Dept of Education, USDA).  Some agencies offer proposers the option of submitting grant applications using Grants.gov (i.e., NASA, NSF).  PIs should read the program guidelines carefully to see the requirements of the federal sponsor they are applying to.

Q.  Do I submit the proposals to Grants.gov?

A.  ORS must perform the actual submission.  Send the routed, signed Internal Routing Sheet, along with a hard copy of the final application package, to ORS no fewer than 5 (business) days ahead of the agency deadline.  Upload the completed (PureEdge) application file to the ORS Dropbox [Instructions] no fewer than 5 days before the deadline.

Q.  Where can I find the information required for the standard forms?

ASee the examples of Standard Forms.  The information can also be found on the "Information for Proposals" page.

Use the TTU DUNS # 041367053.

Q.  Since the proposals are submitted electronically, are Internal Routing Sheets still required?

AYes.  The internal routing and approval process remains unchanged by the transition to Grants.gov.  Signed routing sheets are required for every submission.

Q.  I can't get my materials to ORS in the timeframe specified by ORS.  Will you still submit my application to Grants.gov?

AOur policy specifies that ORS needs the routed, signed Internal Routing Sheet no fewer than 5 business days ahead of the agency deadline.  Upload the completed (PureEdge) application file to the ORS Dropbox [Instructions] no fewer than 4 days before the deadline.  We will try to do what we can given the shortened time frame, but you run the risk of a submission that fails to pass the Grants.gov and agency validations necessary by the agency deadline.

Q.  I don't want to use PureEdge.  Can I still submit proposals on paper like I always have?

AIt depends on the program and agency. Read the guidelines carefully for the program you are interested in. There are very few programs that still allow paper submissions.  Most federal sponsors have already made the switch to Grants.gov.

Q.  If I provide all of the documents for my proposal, will ORS fill out the Grants.gov forms for me?

A Sorry, no. You must fill them in yourself and upload the completed file to the ORS Dropbox [Instructions].

Q.  How do I use PureEdge Viewer to work on my applications on a Macintosh (or other non-Windows system) computer?

ARight now, non-Windows users will need to use the Citrix solution.  Citrix is a PC-emulating software that is free to download.  Click here to learn more about using Citrix. (clicking this link will take you to the Grants.gov website.)    [Alternate Instructions for Mac Users] A non-Windows version of PureEdge should be available in November 2006.

Q.  Will the PureEdge forms work with every web browser?

ANo.  PureEdge does not work with Safari or Firefox.  The PureEdge forms will only work with Internet Explorer 5.01 and higher or Netscape Communicator 4.5 - 4.8, Netscape 6.1, 6.2, or 7.  Additionally, your web browser must be enabled to accept cookies.

Q.  I have downloaded the PureEdge forms from Grants.gov.  The cover page of the grant application package asks for "Application Filing Name."  What am I supposed to put here?  The directions are vague.

AThis information is used for tracking your application through the Grants.gov process.  Applicants should use the following format:  PI LAST NAME: Some of the proposal title.  This will allow us to identify the proposal as yours as it makes its way through the system.

Q.  I heard from a colleague who has already submitted a proposal on Grants.gov that I only need to complete the yellow fields in the PureEdge forms.  Is this true?

AThe mandatory fields, that are highlighted in yellow, are common to ALL applications.  Your particular program may require more information be completed on the SF-424 that is not highlighted in yellow.  That information is contained in the program guidelines.  Failure to complete all mandatory fields (whether they are in yellow or not) may result in a submission that fails to pass the Grants.gov and agency validation procedures.

Q.  What format do the forms that I attach to my Grants.gov application packet need to be in?

A.  Grants.gov will accept many different form types (i.e., doc, rtf, pdf).  Check the program guidelines carefully to see what format the sponsoring agency will accept.  (Some, like NIH and NSF, will only accept attachments that are in PDF format.) Applications that do not follow the guidelines may be rejected with errors.

Q.  I don't have any way to create PDF files.  Do I have to purchase a copy of Adobe Acrobat just so that I can submit proposals through Grants.gov.  I can't afford to do that.

ANo.  There are PDF generators on the market, many of which are free or very low cost.  Click here to see a list.

Q. Is it true that we no longer need to put page numbers anywhere in the proposal text because Grants.gov will number the pages automatically?

A.  This varies by agency.  NIH does not want page numbers because their system creates one file from all the parts and then puts in page numbers and creates a table of contents.  Read the program guidelines carefully for your application.
